Daily Message – Thursday’s Focus: Cheerful Giving

STM Bible Snack

Luke 6:30-31 [read Luke 6:27-36 (30-31) compare Matthew 5:38-42 (42)]
Give to everyone who asks of you; and, when anyone takes away what is yours, do not demand its return. 31 Do to others as you wish them to do to you. (OEBus)
KJV: Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

These are acts of love that please God. They are not commands, that was the old way, but moves from the heart. Keep in mind that under grace we are free and not under rigid do and don’t rules.

All of our giving should be from the heart

2 Corinthians 9:7 [read 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 (7)]
Each of you should think carefully and then decide how much you can give. Then you will not be sad to give that money. Nobody has made you give it. God loves someone who is happy to give help to other people. (EASY)
KJV: Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

Givers give freely

Matthew 10:8 [read Matthew 10:5-15 (8)]
Heal the sick, raise the dead to life again, heal [cleanse] those who have skin diseases [the lepers; see 8:2], and force demons out of people [cast out demons]. I give you these powers freely, so help other people freely [Freely you have received, freely give]. (EXB)
KJV: Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
Luke 11:41 [read Luke 11:37-54 (41)]
Give freely to poor people to show what is inside you. Then everything will be clean for you. (NIRV)
KJV: But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.

Showing love

1 John 3:17 [read 1 John 3:16-23 (17)]
But if someone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but refuses to help—how can the love of God dwell in a person like that? (CEB)
KJV: But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

You set the standard!

Luke 6:37-38 [read Luke 6:37-42 (37-38) compare Matthew 7:1-6 (2)]
Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” (NLT)
KJV: Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: 38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
Proverbs 11:25 [read Proverbs 11: (25)]
Generosity will be rewarded: Give a cup of water, and you will receive a cup of water in return. (CEV)
KJV: The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

Better to give then receive

Acts 20:35 [read Acts 20: (35)]
I have always shown you that you must work hard, as I have. You must help those who cannot work. By so doing you are remembering the words of the Lord Jesus. He said, “It makes you more happy to give something than to get something.” (WE)
KJV: I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Luke 14:12-14 [read Luke 14:7-14 (12-14)]
Then Jesus also said to the Pharisee who had invited Him [to dinner], “When you prepare a breakfast or a supper, do not invite your friends, or brothers, or relatives or rich neighbors [only], for maybe they will invite you back, and [then] you will be repaid [for your kindness]. 13 But when you prepare a banquet, invite people who are poor, disabled, physically disabled and blind [as well]. 14 Then you will receive a blessing because these people do not have anything to pay you back with, for you will be paid back when righteous people are raised from the dead.” (AUV)
KJV: Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. 13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

God is appreciative of these acts of love. They are not orders as was the old way [under the law]; rather, they come from the heart. Keep in mind that grace gives us freedom and does not impose strict rules on us. So be a giver and please God! I pray that you have enjoyed this Bible snack. Blessings to you and your loved ones— Tim. ☺
