STM Bible Lesson – God’s Word is the Best Soul Food
Lesson focus: 2 Timothy 3:15-17. Bible lesson background: The Word of God feeds your soul and is the source of the wisdom of salvation also. In other words:
- It reveals God’s will.
- Provides corrective information for right living.
- And tells us what we must do as well as not do to please God.
[read 2 Timothy 3:10-17 (15-17)].
2 Timothy 3:15-17
You have known the Holy Scriptures since you were a child. The Scriptures are able to make you wise. And that wisdom leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (ICB)
16 Everything in the Scriptures is God’s Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping people and for correcting them and showing them how to live. 17 The Scriptures train God’s servants to do all kinds of good deeds. (CEV)
God’s word boring?
Have you ever felt like God’s word, the Bible, is boring? Maybe you aren’t bored. Perhaps you are not interested in knowing God. Are you interested in what God said to you? Yes, without a doubt, the Bible is His message to you.
All of the Scriptures are inspired (divinely breathed out) by God. Of course, you may ask, ‘why did He do this for me?’
- The first thing to remember, God’s word will teach you. Hear the word and understand it. Read it/see and perceive. Use the Bible as your life coach and for life advice. Wise people get advice from others who have knowledge. Who has more wisdom than God?
- Second, the word of God (the Bible) will help you. It will show what needs to change in your life. God’s word will also make you aware of the helper. You do not have to go through this life without divine support.
- Most important, this word of life will show you how to live. So you can please God and receive your reward for doing what He wants. You are here for a reason; learn how to live right!
The Bible is the only book I know that grows with you. From infancy to maturity, it gets more clear as you develop. Read a Scripture today, if you keep learning, ten years later you get a new understanding. —Tim
You are not into it
You are doing something you really do not want to do. Many students say ‘school is boring’. Did you have this experience?
Often the same ones are likely to also think church and/or God’s word is boring. Is someone making you go to church or Bible class? Keep this in mind, they are trying to help you live a good life.
Find a way to become interested in the Bible.
- One suggestion is to join a study group or use a modern version* of the Bible. Versions that use modern English can help make it more interesting.
- Another option is to ask your pastor or spiritual leader for advice. Find a way to get into the word of God.
You do not get it
There are portions of the Bible that are not easy to get. This can cause a person to no longer want to read or listen. Be careful, the Bible is not just a book or novel, it is spiritual. Meant for the born again children of God.
To understand it you need a spiritual teacher. Allow yourself time to learn how to use the Holy Spirit to teach you. At the right time, you will be able to read and study God’s word on your own. Until then, be patient and learn from those who are qualified to teach.
Now the natural person [without the Holy Spirit] does not receive the things [i.e., truths] revealed by the Holy Spirit of God, because they are [considered] foolishness to him. And he cannot understand them because they must be discerned by using spiritual judgment [i.e., judgment aided by the Holy Spirit] [1 Corinthians 2:14 (AUV)].
Speak up
Do not assume your pastor or spiritual leader knows you are not getting it. For instance, you are a babe in Christ. You attend a Bible class with the mature members. But, you do not know as much about the Bible as they do. So you feel left out. They give answers and you do not take part.
Mature students will get bored when they are fed milk instead of meat. All need proper spiritual nutrition.
Note: Babes need the milk of God’s word. The mature need the meat of the word (1 Corinthians 3:2).
You cannot afford to fall behind or get bored. If you do not get it, speak up. Let your teacher know you need help. Do it in private if you must. Learn to love the word of God.
You do not see the point
What is the point of learning about God? There are benefits and rewards for reading/hearing God’s word. Improved life here on earth and blissful life after.
Can you afford to give up? No, please do not stop; adjust. Make the proper changes. Pray and ask the Lord to give you an appetite or hunger for the word. After all, God’s Word is the best soul food.
There is hope for you. Yes, the world is crazy and things that are happening can make you feel hopeless. For this reason, you have God’s word, to aid in giving you hope (Romans 15:4).
Source of Life
Did you know that God’s word is a source of life? It is the word of life.
Truly I say to you, The man whose ears are open to my word and who has faith in him who sent me, has eternal life; he will not be judged, but has come from death into life. 25 Truly I say to you, The time is coming, it has even now come, when the voice of the Son of God will come to the ears of the dead, and those hearing it will have life [John 5:24-25 (BBE)].
Be ready and willing to receive the word of life. It will increase your faith (Romans 10:17) and save you from spiritual death. You cannot have a spiritual life without the word of life—God’s word.
Real soul food
The word of God is food for your soul, the real (best) soul food. One cannot live by only eating bread that feeds the body. The spiritual part of you also needs feeding; the Spiritual bread—God’s word[1]. Let the word of life be your spiritual food. Remember, God’s Word is the best soul food. So, eat it often!
Jesus said, ‘I am the bread of life‘[2]… Learn to hunger for the word of God. Binge on it and live! Do you now understand why you cannot afford to be bored with God’s word a source of life? Maybe you’ll agree, that God’s Word is the best soul food!
