Godly love is one of the many types of love. Since it is a gift from God through the Holy Spirit, our feelings have nothing to do with it. Read this Bible snack to gain more insight.
Godly Love Is From God And A Genuine Gift
STM Bible Snack
- from 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a [read 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 (4-8)]
- Love is patient, and is kind; charity (love) does not envy; love does not boast, and is not arrogant; 5 It is not rude, does not insist on its own way, is not easily provoked, love keeps no account of wrongs suffered;
6 It does not rejoice in injustice, but rejoices in the truth; 7 Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails: … (RKJNT). - KJV: Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 8 Charity never faileth: - Godly—agape (ag-ah’-pay)—love is very different from natural—philautos (fil’-au-tos)—love; 1 Corinthians 13 (especially verses 4-8) covers some of the elements of love but other scriptures also help us know about Godly love.
Excuse me for not elaborating, but God’s word speaks for itself and His Spirit agrees with its truth. Meditate on God’s word, let it speak life to you, and let it guide you as you walk in the Spirit.
Agape love is from God
- Romans 5:5 [read Romans 5:1-5 (5)]
- Hope does not disappoint us, for God has poured out his love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, who is God’s gift to us. (GNT)
- KJV: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
- Agape love is a genuine gift from God via the Holy Spirit. It is similar to God’s grace; it is not something that we earn.
- Ephesians 5:1-2 [read Ephesians 5:1-7 (1-2)]
- So, as dearly loved children, you people should [try to] be like God. 2 Live in a loving way, just like Christ loved us and gave Himself up [to die] for us as an offering and fragrant smelling sacrifice to God. (AUV)
- KJV: Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
What is Godly love?
Love is…
- Patient (endures all things without anger or complaint) and kind (is tender, selfless, and giving). In other words, it teams up with two of the qualities (fruit) of the Spirit: patience and kindness.
- Not arrogant, rude, or easily provoked.
- From God (1 John 4:7) and made perfect in us (1 John 4:12) [read 1 John 4:7-16 (7 and 12)].
Charity (love)…
- Keeps no account of wrongs suffered and rejoices in the truth.
- Bears {patiently endures} all things, Believes {trust Christ in} all things, hopes all things and endures all things.
- Helps you love others as much as you love yourself (Mark 12:33) [read Mark 12:28-34 (33)].
Love does not…
- Envy, boast, or insist on its own way.
- Rejoice in injustice or do anything wrong to a neighbor (Romans 13:10) [read Romans 13:8-10 (10)].
- Hate his fellow Christian (1 John 4:20-21) or hate God’s word {teaching or correction}. (John 14:24 and Proverbs 15:12) [read John 14:19-24 (24)].
Godly Love – a genuine gift
- 1 Corinthians 13:8 [read 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 (8)]
- All the special gifts and powers from God will someday come to an end, but love goes on forever. Someday prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge—these gifts will disappear. (TLB)
- KJV: Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
The Love of Christ
- Ephesians 3:18-19 [Read Ephesians 3:14-21 (18-19)]
- And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide, how long, how high, and how deep that love is.
19 Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with everything God has for you. (ERV) - KJV: May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Godly love is the love that we receive from God. It is divine, pure, and genuine. Show and give Godly love; let those you love know that you love them by saying it with words and actions. Thank you, Marlona, for the question and for taking the time to view this Bible snack. He speaks to us in various ways 1) through his Word. 2) also through other people, I remember just before Pett (for the benefit of others, Pett is my mother) died, I had just returned to So Cal and during one of my home bible studies in Inglewood, one of the mothers said, “Elder the Lord told me to tell you to go back”. I got there on the day she died and had enough time to hold her and let her go. 3) He often speaks to me directly, usually in a very soft voice. I get chills and feel anointed when he speaks. We should know his voice because of having his Spirit, the Spirit makes us know that he’s speaking to us. If you don’t mind, I will do a lesson or snack on this topic so we have the Word to back it up.
