So be careful! Always be ready to listen when God speaks. God used Moses as his servant on the earth to speak to Israel’s people. When they refused to obey, God punished them. They could not get away. As for us, God speaks to us from heaven. So we will certainly not get away from God’s punishment if we turn away from him. Hebrews 12:25 (EASY) [read Hebrews 12:25-29 (25)].
How to hear from God in 5 Ways
1. God talked to the Israelites
- They said, ‘The Lord our God has shown us his Glory and his greatness! We heard him speak from the fire. We have seen today that it is possible to continue living even after God speaks to us. 25 But if we hear the Lord our God speak to us again, surely we will die! That terrible fire will destroy us. We don’t want to die. Deuteronomy 5:24-25 (ERV) [read Deuteronomy 5:23-32 (24-25)].
- How did they know it’s from God? I will let you answer this one. Please share your answer in the comments.
2. He speaks through his Word
- Jesus answered, “Scripture says, ‘A person cannot live on bread alone but on every word that God speaks.'” Matthew 4:4 (GW) [read Matthew 4:1-11 (4)].
- How do we know it’s from God? We must trust that what is in the Bible is from God [see 2 Timothy 3:10-17 (16)]. So, it is by faith that we accept the Word of God as truth.
3. God sends messages through angels
- All at once an angel from the Lord appeared to Zechariah at the right side of the altar. 12 Zechariah was confused and afraid when he saw the angel. 13 But the angel told him: Don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayers. Your wife Elizabeth will have a son, and you must name him John. Luke 1:11-13 (CEV) [read Luke 1:5-25 (11-13)].
- How did Zechariah know it was from God? It was an angel!
4. He speaks through chosen people
- A. Prophets, Ezekiel was one of the prophets.
- The Lord spoke his word to me. He said: 2 “Human being, prophesy against the leaders of Israel, who are like shepherds. Prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Lord God says: How terrible it will be for the shepherds of Israel who feed only themselves! Why don’t the shepherds feed the flock? Ezekiel 34:1-2 (ICB) [read Ezekiel 34:1-10 (1-2)].
- B. Pastors, the overseers/shepherds
- Look after yourselves and everyone the Holy Spirit has placed in your care. Be like shepherds to God’s church. It is the flock he bought with the blood of his own Son. Acts 20:28 (CEV) [read Acts 20:17-38 (28)]
- C. Teachers, Paul was chosen and sent to teach.
- I {Paul} was appointed to be a preacher [of this testimony] and an apostle and teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles. (I am telling the truth and not lying). 1 Timothy 2:7 (AUV) [read 1 Timothy 2:1-7 (7)]
- How do we know what they say is from God? Search the scriptures to confirm what they say.
5. Directly, i.e., via the Holy Spirit or dreams
- Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared. A light shone in the prison cell. The angel struck Peter on his side. Peter woke up. “Quick!” the angel said. “Get up!” The chains fell off Peter’s wrists. Acts 12:7 (NIRV) [read Acts 12:5-19 (7)].
- How do we know it’s God? By the Holy Spirit.
- Jesus said in John 10:27 (FBV)
- “My sheep recognize [hear] my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
Pray for the gift of discernment [1 Corinthians 12:10]. That is, you want to be able to tell when it’s from God, another spirit [1 John 4:1], or your thoughts.
