Fear God; Know What Happens If God’s Not Pleased?

Fear God and give him glory

STM Bible Snack

Revelation 14:7 [read Revelation 14:6-13 (7)]
The angel said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory because the time has come for him to judge. Worship the one who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs.” (NOG)
KJV: Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Fear God

1 Peter 2:17 [read 1 Peter 2:13-17 (17)]
Honor everyone. Love the family of believers. Have respectful fear of God. Honor the emperor [i.e., the leader of the country]. (CEB)
KJV: Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
BLB Thayer’s Greek Lexicon – fear in 1 Peter 2:17; Revelation 14:7
G5399 φοβέω phobeo (fo-ɓe’-ō) v. To have a reverential {meaning: showing or having a lot of respect} awe of fear.
Proverbs 14:26-27 [read Proverbs 14:26-27]
Those who respect [fear] the Lord will have security [or confidence], and their children will be protected [have a refuge]. 27 Respect for [fear of] the Lord gives life [is a fountain of life] and can save people from death [turning people aside from death traps/snares]. (EXB)
KJV: In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge. 27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

Respect God enough to live holy

2 Corinthians 7:1 [read 2 Corinthians 6:11-7:1 (7:1)]
Because we have these promises [see 2 Corinthians 6:16-18], dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God. (NLT)
KJV: Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Fear here is reverence and respect (for authority, rank, dignity).

God warned the Israelites

Jeremiah 5:22 [read Jeremiah 5:18-25 (22)]
Surely you are afraid of [fear] me,” says the Lord. “You should shake with fear in my presence. (ICB)
KJV: Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
This form of fear uses accusative language to express fear of the Lord.

Do you know what happens if God is not pleased?

Jesus teaches the fear of God.
Matthew 10:28 [read Matthew 10:27-31 (28)]
Don’t be afraid of people. They can kill the body, but they cannot kill the soul. The only one you should fear is God, the one who can send the body and the soul to be destroyed in hell. (ERV)
KJV: And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
This type of fear is to fear one, be afraid of one, lest he do harm, be displeased, etc.

All should stand in awe of [fear] God

Psalm 33:8-9 [read Psalm 33:8-9]
Everyone in this world should worship and honor the Lord! 9 As soon as he spoke the world was created; at his command, the earth was formed. (ERV)
KJV: Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. 9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

Remember, God has the power and authority to destroy (send us to hell) or give us a life that never ends (Luke 12:4-7 and John 3:1-21). If our love for others is real—Godly love—and we live right, free from sin, we have no reason to fear what God will do to us. I cannot stress how important it is to respect and fear God.

So learn to FEAR, respect, honor, worship, and obey Him. Thank you for taking the time to read this Bible snack. I urge you to make full use of it. Blessings to you and your loved ones— Tim. ☺
