God gave us His Spirit. And the Spirit doesn’t make us weak and fearful. Instead, the Spirit gives us power and love. He helps us control ourselves. (NIRV)

KJV: For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

1. God gave us self-control through the Holy Spirit

Controlling our actions is so-o important that God gave us the ability to control our actions. That is, the things we say, think, and do. It is a quality of the Holy Spirit. So, it is something we should learn to use.

Romans 12:9-13 [read Romans 12:9-21 (9-13)]

Be sincere in your love for others.
Hate everything that is evil and hold tight to everything that is good.
10 Love each other as brothers and sisters and honor others more than you do yourself.
11 Never give up.
Eagerly follow the Holy Spirit and serve the Lord.
12 Let your hope make you glad.
Be patient in time of trouble and never stop praying.
13 Take care of God’s needy people
and welcome strangers into your home. (CEV)

KJV: Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; 11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; 12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; 13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

2. The wisdom of using your ability to control your actions

Wisdom of Solomon 8:7 [read Wisdom of Solomon 8:2-20 (7)]

Having the ability to control your actions is a very important part of the Christian life. In fact, in the Wisdom of Solomon 8:7, Solomon states:

Do you love justice? All the virtues are the result of Wisdom’s work: justice and courage, self-control and understanding. Life can offer us nothing more valuable than these.” (GNT)

KJV: And if a man love righteousness her labours are virtues: for she teacheth temperance and prudence, justice and fortitude: which are such things, as men can have nothing more profitable in their life.

Proverbs 25:28

“A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls” meaning you are without defense and exposed. (NLT)

KJV: He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Control works, thoughts, and feelings

To have self-discipline is to control your actions {works—the things you do}, desires {thoughts; the things you think about}, and emotions {feelings-our response or reaction to events}.

Proverbs 29:11 [read Proverbs 29:11]

A [shortsighted] fool always loses his temper and displays his anger, But a wise man [uses self-control and] holds it back. (AMP)

KJV: A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.

3. God wants you to live holy

1 Peter 1:13-16 [read 1 Peter 1:13-21 (16)]

So be watchful, and control yourselves completely. In this way, put your hope in the grace that lies ahead. This grace will be brought to you when Jesus Christ returns. 14 You should obey your Father. You shouldn’t give in to evil desires. They controlled your life when you didn’t know any better.
15 The God who chose you is holy. So you should be holy in all that you do. 16 It is written, “Be holy, because I am holy.” (Leviticus 11:44,45; 19:2) (NIRV)

KJV: Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

Use your helper to control yourself

Galatians 5:22-23 [read Galatians 5:16-26 (22-23)]

But if God’s spirit controls people, he gets them to do good things. You know that a good fruit tree always gets good fruit on it. Well, like that, a person with God’s spirit does good things. If you let God’s spirit lead you, he will get you to love God and to love other people. And you will be happy. And you will feel good and quiet inside yourself so that you will not fight with other people…
23 He will stop you from thinking you are too important, and he will help you to control yourself. And there is no law to stop anybody doing any of those good things. (PEV)

KJV: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
