Peace Is A Gift, So Live Free From Worry

STM Bible Study Summary

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. - Peace Colossians 3:15 (CENT)"

Psalms 29:11

The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace*. (KJV)

* H7965 NOTE: Peace in Psalms 29:11 and Isaiah 9:6 are from the Hebrew שָׁלוֹם שָׁלוֹם shalowm (shaw-lome’) (or shalom {shaw-lome’}); peace with God, especially in covenant relation.

Think about this

Your life and surroundings may be filled with trouble, but you can have peace within. Tour the Scriptures with me to learn how to calm the inner you. Adam Clarke describes the Spirit’s peace as “The calm, quiet, and order, which take place in the justified soul, instead of the doubts, fears, alarms, and dreadful forebodings, which every true penitent less or more feels, and must feel till the assurance of pardon brings peace and satisfaction to the mind.”

Key Points:

  1. Harmony with God

Our primary focus in this study is the peace we get when we are born again. This type of peace is harmony with God and unity with other born-again believers. Be eager and strive earnestly to guard and keep the harmony and oneness of [and produced by] the Spirit in the binding power of peace [Ephesians 4:3 (AMPC)].

  2. Your seal

Find peace in knowing the Holy Spirit is your seal or guarantee of salvation. You too heard the word of truth in Christ, which is the good news of your salvation. You were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit because you believed in Christ. (CEB) 14 He {the Holy Spirit} is a down payment of our inheritance, until God’s own possession [i.e., His people] receives redemption. [Note: Here “redemption” refers to receiving a new body in heaven]. May this bring about praise to God’s splendor (AUV) [Ephesians 1:13-14].

  3. Through Jesus

Learn to let the Lord Jesus, the Prince of Peace (Sar Shalom), give you peace. For Jesus ‘was given up to death to atone for our offences,’ and was raised to life that we might be pronounced righteous. 5 1 Therefore, having been pronounced righteous as the result of faith, let us enjoy peace with God through Jesus Christ, our Lord [Romans 4:25-5:1 (TCNT)].

Fruit of the Spirit

Picture of a sunset at the harbor for the peace bible study Romans 14:17
For the holy nation of God is not food and drink. It is being right with God. It is peace and joy given by the Holy Spirit.
Romans 14:17 (NLV)

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 Gentleness, self-control: against such things there is no law (RKJNT).

G1515 εἰρήνη eirene (ei-ree’-nee) n. peace between individuals, i. e. harmony, concord (to agree). To be (act) peaceful:—be at (have, live in) peace, live peaceably.

This fruit, like all fruit of the Spirit, is unconditional and powerful. It is God’s gift to His children—through the Holy Spirit. Philippians 4:7 says it is beyond understanding; it protects (guards or keeps) your hearts and minds (thoughts and feelings; YOU {humon}).

The ‘fruit of the Spirit’ peace, eirēnē (ei-ray’-nay), is the peace that Jesus says is “not as the world gives“, it is His (God’s) peace John 14:27. This freedom from anxiety is not connected to possessions, income, education, intellect, or human relationships. We cannot find this through anything other than the Spirit of God.

Live free from worry

“I leave you peace [the Greek word for “peace” reflects the Hebrew shalom, a typical Hebrew farewell; but Jesus’ peace, in the sense of wholeness, is also a characteristic of the messianic kingdom]; my peace I give you. I do not give it to you as the world does. So don’t let your hearts be troubled or afraid. John 14:27 (EXB)

And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 (AMPC)

Other words

Eirēnē in other Bible translations
There are a few translations that use a different word for eirēnē in Galatians 5:22.
The (CEV) translators used the word ‘peaceful‘.
(OJB) used ‘shalom
The (SENT) translators used ‘harmony‘.
Eugene Peterson of (The Message) used ‘serenity‘.
(JMNT) translator gives this option “harmony; [= shalom]”.
(ERRB) adds ‘shalom‘.

Definitions

1. In a general sense, a state of quiet or tranquillity; freedom from disturbance or agitation; applicable to society, to individuals, or to the temper of the mind.
2. Freedom from agitation or disturbance by the passions, as from fear, terror, anger, anxiety or the like; quietness of mind; tranquillity; calmness; quiet of conscience.
3. Heavenly rest; the happiness of heaven.

Charles Buck says “spiritual peace is deliverance from sin, by which we were at enmity with God, Romans 5:1. The result of which is peace, in the conscience, Hebrews 10:1-39.

  • This peace is the gift of God through Jesus Christ, 2 Thessalonians 3:16.
  • It is a blessing of great importance, Psalms 119:165 and denominated perfect, Isaiah 26:3.
  • Inexpressible, Philippians 4:7.
  • Permanent, Job 34:22. John 16:22.
  • Eternal, Isaiah 57:2; Hebrews 4:9.”

Be at peace

My friends, be at peace with yourself and whatever situation you are in, allow God’s peace into your life experiences. This benefit of the Holy Spirit helps you to relax and be content through Christ free from worry and fear.

Question for ‘part one’ – Fruit of the Spirit: Are you at peace within your mind and heart?

You must know…

Picture of a sunset at the lake for the peace bible study Romans 15:13
I pray that God, who gives hope, will bless you with complete happiness and peace because of your faith. And may the power of the Holy Spirit fill you with hope.
Romans 15:13 (CEV)

One thing you must know is the Holy Spirit is God living inside of you. With this in mind, you must know that what you do and how you feel reflects on God. So use the qualities that the Holy Spirit gives to live in a way that pleases God.

Please note that Paul urged the Ephesians to use gentleness, patience, love, and peace in their lives.

Ephesians 4:1-3

I urge you, therefore, as a prisoner of the Lord, to live in a way that measures up to [the standard required by] God when He called you. 2 Live in a humble, gentle and patient way, showing tolerance [for the weaknesses] of one another out of love [for them]. 3 Eagerly try to maintain the unity produced by the Holy Spirit by being bound together in peace. (AUV)

Live peaceably

If you have God’s spirit you can live in harmony with all people. In fact, you are advised to do so (Romans 12:18). Know that you can do it with the help of the Lord.

Do not [try to] pay back a wrong done to you by doing something wrong to the other person. Think about how to live honorably in front of all people. 18 If it is at all possible, as far as your part is concerned, live peacefully with all people. 19 Do not take revenge on someone who has wronged you,

but leave it up to God’s wrath [to take care of it], for it is written [Deuteronomy 22:35], “The Lord says, I will pay people back [for doing wrong] because taking revenge belongs to me” [Romans 12:17-19 (AUV)].

G1514 εἰρηνεύω eireneuo (ei-rayn-yoo’-o) v. 1. to cultivate or keep peace, harmony.

Luke 12:25-26

Do not worry about things in this life. Apply the logic that Jesus used. Afterall what is the benefit of worry?

Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? 26 And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things? (NLT)

Prosperity

This may surprise you. Shalom and eirene are conveyed as prosperity in certain cases.

My son, don’t forget my teaching, keep my commands in your heart; 2 for they will add to you many days, years of life and peace [Proverbs 3:1-2 (CJB)].

H7965 שָׁלוֹם shalowm (shaw-lome’) n-m. שָׁלֹם shalom (shaw-lome’ 1. (by extension) health, prosperity, peace. [from H7999]

And as He approached, He saw the city, and He wept [audibly] over it, 42 Exclaiming, Would that you had known personally, even at least in this your day, the things that make for peace (for freedom from all the distresses that are experienced as the result of sin and upon which your peace—your security, safety, prosperity, and happiness—depends)! But now they are hidden from your eyes [Luke 19:41-42 (AMPC)].

G1515 after the Hebrew שָׁלום, security, safety, prosperity, felicity, (because peace and harmony make and keep things safe and prosperous).

eirēnē

I found three other English words/phrases for eirēnē via KJV. They are helpful in that they show more types of freedom from discord, persecution, and war/unrest.

One again (peace/harmony between individuals) – Acts 7:26. || Rest (free from persecutions) – Acts 9:31. || Quietness (a state of national tranquility) – Acts 24:2.

Question for ‘you must know’: Do you know the Greek word for peacefulness that comes from the Holy Spirit?

Peace wrap-up

Philippians 4:4-7

Be full of joy always because you belong to the Lord. Again I say, be full of joy! 5 Let all people see how gentle you are. The Lord is coming again soon. 6 Do not worry. Learn to pray about everything. Give thanks to God as you ask Him for what you need. 7 The peace of God is much greater than the human mind can understand. This peace will keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (NLV)

What better words to close this lesson than these from 2 Corinthians 13:11
Finally, believers, rejoice! Be made complete [be what you should be], be comforted, be like-minded, live in peace [enjoy the spiritual well-being experienced by believers who walk closely with God]; and the God of love and peace [the source of lovingkindness] will be with you. (AMP)
Bible Exposition Commentary – Be Encouraged (2 Corinthians)
Live in peace was a needed admonition, for there were divisions and dissensions in the church (see 2 Cor. 12:20). If they practiced love and sought to be of one mind, the wars would cease and they would enjoy peace in their fellowship. To be of one mind does not mean that we all agree on everything, but that we agree not to disagree over matters that are not essential.
Life Application Bible Commentary
Paul’s closing words—what he wanted the Corinthians to remember about the needs facing their church—are still fitting for the church today. When these qualities are not present, there are problems that must be dealt with. These traits do not come to a church by glossing over problems, conflicts, and difficulties. They are not produced by neglect, denial, withdrawal, or bitterness. They are the by-products of the extremely hard work of solving problems. Just as Paul and the Corinthians had to hammer out difficulties to bring peace, so believers must apply the principles of God’s Word and not just hear them.

Will you allow the peacefulness of God to keep your heart and mind? Peace from God’s Spirit is a result of your faith. Those born again have The Creator of all things living within. No other form of peace compares to this.

2 Thessalonians 3:16

The Lord helps us to have peace in our minds. I pray that the Lord himself will give that peace to you at all times, whatever happens. I pray that the Lord will be with all of you. (EASY)

Live a life free from worry in the peace and joy of the Holy Spirit. I pray that you have enjoyed and will make the most of this Bible study. Blessings to you and your loved ones— Tim. ☺
