How To Hear From God And Know It’s God
STM Bible Lesson
- Lesson focus: Hebrews 12:25. Bible lesson background Hebrews 12:12-29 – Bible Reader’s Companion:
- A) Faith calls for us to live with others in holiness and peace (vv. 14-17).
- B) The first covenant was given to a frightened mob who stood before an earthly mountain that trembled and shook. Our covenant was given by Jesus who opens heaven itself (vv. 18-24).
- C) God now intends to shake not just a mountain but the earth and heavens as well, and we alone will inherit the unshakable kingdom of our God (vv. 25-27).
- D) How holy our lives should be, and how fervent the worship of our awesome Lord (vv. 28-29).
- Hebrews 12:25 [read Hebrews 12:25-29 (25)]
- So be careful! Always be ready to listen when God speaks. God used Moses as his servant on the earth to speak to Israel’s people. When they refused to obey, God punished them. They could not get away. As for us, God speaks to us from heaven. So we will certainly not get away from God’s punishment if we turn away from him. (EASY)
- KJV: See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
How to hear from God in 5 Ways
God speaks to His chosen people in many ways. Are you listening? Let’s review 5 of them.
1. God talked to the Israelites
- Deuteronomy 5:24-25 [read Deuteronomy 5:23-32 (24-25)]
- They said, ‘The Lord our God has shown us his Glory and his greatness! We heard him speak from the fire. We have seen today that it is possible to continue living even after God speaks to us. 25 But if we hear the Lord our God speak to us again, surely we will die! That terrible fire will destroy us. We don’t want to die. (ERV)
- KJV: And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath showed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth. 25 Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die.
- How did they know it’s from God? I will let you answer this one. Please share your answer in the comments.
2. He speaks through the scriptures; God’s word
- 2 Timothy 3:16 [read 2 Timothy 3:10-17 (16)]
- Everything in the Scriptures is God’s Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping people and for correcting them and showing them how to live. (CEV)
- KJV: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
- How do we know it’s from God? We must trust that what is in the Bible is from God. So, it is by faith that we accept the Word of God as truth.
3. God sends messages through angels
- Acts 12:7 [read Acts 12:5-19 (7)]
- Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared. A light shone in the prison cell. The angel struck Peter on his side. Peter woke up. “Quick!” the angel said. “Get up!” The chains fell off Peter’s wrists. (NIRV)
- KJV: And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
- How did Peter know it was from God? It was an angel!
4. He speaks through chosen people
- A. Prophets, Ezekiel was one of the prophets. Ezekiel 34:1-2 [read Ezekiel 34:1-10 (1-2)]
- The Lord spoke his word to me. He said: 2 “Human being, prophesy against the leaders of Israel, who are like shepherds. Prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Lord God says: How terrible it will be for the shepherds of Israel who feed only themselves! Why don’t the shepherds feed the flock? (ICB)
- KJV: And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 2 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?
- B. Pastors, the overseers/shepherds. Acts 20:28 [read Acts 20:17-38 (28)]
- So, pay close attention to your [own] lives, and to all [members] of the flock [i.e., the congregation] of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers [i.e., elders, shepherds or pastors]. Provide [spiritual] food for the church of the Lord which He purchased by [shedding] His own blood. (AUV)
- KJV: Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
- C. Teachers, Paul was chosen and sent to teach. 1 Timothy 2:7 [read 1 Timothy 2:1-7 (7)]
- I {Paul} was appointed to be a preacher [of this testimony] and an apostle and teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles. (I am telling the truth and not lying). (AUV)
- KJV: Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
- How do we know what they say is from God? Search the scriptures to confirm what they say.
5. Directly, i.e., via the Holy Spirit or dreams
- Acts 9:5 [read Acts 9:1-9 (5)]
- “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus,” he replied. “I am the one you are opposing. (NIRV)
- KJV: And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
Pray (ask) for discernment
- Spiritual gifts – 1 Corinthians 12:8a and 10 [read 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 (8a and 10)]
- For one person is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom… 10 to another performance of miracles, to another prophecy, and to another discernment of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. (NET)
- KJV: For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
- Fausset’s Bible Dictionary: Discerning between the operation of God’s Spirit and that of the evil spirit, or unaided human spirit claiming to utter the dictates of God’s Spirit.
- So, pray for the gift of discernment. That is, you want to be able to tell when what you hear is from God, another spirit [1 John 4:1], or your thoughts.
Discerning False Prophets (teachers, teaching)
- Any message from God should be found in the Bible, supported by scripture, or not contradict what is in the Bible. Many preachers fail to give scriptures to back what they say. That is a red flag moment!
- 1 John 4:1 [read 1 John 4:1-6 (1)]
- Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test [i.e., require proof that they and their message are genuine] them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world. (NLT)
- KJV: Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
- John 10:27
- My sheep recognize (hear; listen to; know) my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. (TLB)
- KJV: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
Accordingly, if you are a child of God, you will know His voice. So, now that you know how to hear from God, are you listening? I pray that you have enjoyed and will make the most of this Bible lesson. Blessings to you and your loved ones—♥ Tim. ☺
