The Holy Spirit; 2 Valuable Truths You Should Know

There is one body and one Spirit

STM Bible Lesson

Lesson focus: Ephesians 4:3-6. Bible lesson background 13: Paul spoke of what we share as believers. We may be different in many ways, but we must be mindful of what we share.

1. Live the way God’s people should live.
a. Be humble, gentle, patient, and accept each other with love.
b. Live in peace and unity through the Spirit.
2. One shared body, Spirit, and hope.
a. There’s one Lord, faith, and baptism.
b. One God, our Father working thru and living in all (born again believers).
Ephesians 4:3-6 [read Ephesians 4:1-6 (3-6)]
Work hard to live together as one by the help of the Holy Spirit. Then there will be peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit. There is one hope in which you were called. 5 There is one Lord and one faith and one baptism. 6 There is one God. He is the Father of us all. Over us all. He is the One working through us all. The one living in us all. (NLV)
KJV: Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

One Spirit, the Holy Spirit of God

1 Corinthians 12:13 [read 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 (13); compare Ephesians 4:1-16]
For by one [Holy] Spirit we were all baptized into one body, [spiritually transformed—united together] whether Jews or Greeks (Gentiles), slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one [Holy] Spirit [since the same Holy Spirit fills each life]. (AMP)
KJV: For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

2 Valuable Truths You Should Know

The lesson’s focus is the Holy Spirit. Of course, you can find many truths about the Spirit of God in the Bible. However, we will highlight 2 valuable truths.
John 4:24 [read John 4:1-26 (24)]
God is Spirit, and those who worship God must be led by the Spirit to worship him according to the truth. (CEV)
KJV: God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

2 Corinthians 3:6 …the Spirit gives life. In Matthew 3:16 it was the Spirit of God that descended on Jesus like a dove.

1. The Holy Spirit is…

Do not let the various Holy Spirit titles/names confuse you. For instance, the Spirit of ChristA, the Spirit of GodB, and the Spirit of the LordC are the Holy Spirit. Jesus actually said He and the Father will live with you.
John 14:23 [read John 14:19-24 (23)]
Jesus answered him, “Those who love me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and my Father and I will come to them and live with them. (GNT)
KJV: Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

A. The Spirit of Christ

Romans 8:9 [read Romans 8:1-11 (9)]
But you are not living the life of the flesh, you are living the life of the Spirit, if the [Holy] Spirit of God [really] dwells within you [directs and controls you]. But if anyone does not possess the [Holy] Spirit of Christ, he is none of His [he does not belong to Christ, is not truly a child of God]. (AMPC)
KJV: But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Was in prophets
1 Peter 1:11 [read 1 Peter 1:3-12 (11)]
The Spirit of Christ was in those prophets. And the Spirit was telling about the sufferings that would happen to Christ and about the glory that would come after those sufferings. The prophets tried to learn about what the Spirit was showing them—when it would happen and what the world would be like at that time. (ERV)
KJV: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
Spirit of Jesus Christ
Philippians 1:19 [read Philippians 1:19-26 (19)]
I’m glad because I know that this will result in my release through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ. (CEB)
KJV: For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

B. The Spirit of God

Matthew 3:16 [read Matthew 3:13-17 (16)]
After Jesus was baptized, he immediately came up from the water. Suddenly, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down as a dove to him. (GW)
KJV: And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
God’s children are led by the Spirit of God
Romans 8:14 [read Romans 8:12-17 (14)]
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. (NRSVA)
KJV: For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Spiritual Wisdom via God’s Spirit
1 Corinthians 2:14 [read 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 (14)]
A person who does not have the {Holy} Spirit [or natural person] does not accept the truths [things] that come from the Spirit of God. That person thinks they are foolish and cannot understand them, because they can only be judged to be true [discerned; assessed] by the {Holy} Spirit.
KJV: But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

C. The Spirit of the Lord

2 Corinthians 3:17 [read 2 Corinthians 3:7-18 (17)]
Now the Lord [i.e., Christ] is the Holy Spirit, and there is freedom [from the bondage of sin and fear] wherever the Spirit of the Lord is. (AUV)
KJV: Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling place with him. John 14:23 (NHEB)

Do not make God’s Holy Spirit have sorrow for the way you live. The Holy Spirit has put a mark on you for the day you will be set free. [Ephesians 4:30 (NLV)].

2. The Holy Spirit lives only in the born-again believers

John 3:5-6 [read (5-6)]
But Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth. Unless you are born from water and the Spirit, you cannot enter God’s kingdom. 6 A person’s body is born from his human parents1st birth. But a person’s spiritual life is born from the Spiritborn again. (ICB)
KJV: Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
NOTE: “Born of water” – refers to the amniotic fluid (the protective liquid contained by the amniotic sac), called water. So, 1st birththe first birth (physical) is of water and born againthe rebirth (2nd birth) is by the Holy Spirit referred to as “Spirit”.
1 Corinthians 3:16 [read 1 Corinthians 3:5-17 (16)]
Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? (NCV)
KJV: Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

The Holy Spirit gave us new life

Titus 3:5 [read Titus 3:1-8 (5)]
He saved us. It wasn’t because of the good things we had done. It was because of his mercy. He saved us by washing away our sins. We were born again. The Holy Spirit gave us new life. (NIRV)
KJV: Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

God’s word is essential

1 Peter 1:23 [read 1 Peter 1:22-25 (23)]
You have been born again by means of the living word of God. His word lasts forever. You were not born again from a seed that will die. You were born from a seed that can’t die. (NIRV)
KJV: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
Some disciples had not heard of the Holy Spirit, see Acts 19:1-10 (1-2). So, God’s word is essential to inform people about the Holy Spiri.

Do Not Grieve the Spirit

Ephesians 4:30 [read Ephesians 4:25-32 (30)]
And do not grieve [bring sorrow to or make the Holy Spirit sad] God’s Holy Spirit by whom you were sealed [i.e., given evidence of God’s ownership] until the day of redemption [i.e., until you receive your new body in heaven. See 1:14]. (AUV)
KJV: And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

The Son’s Spirit is the Holy Spirit

Galatians 4:6 [read Galatians 4:1-7 (6)]
To show that you are his children, God sent the [Holy] Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who cries out, “Father, my Father.”
KJV: And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Jesus said “the Father will send the Holy Spirit

John 14:26 [read John 14:25-31 (26)]
But the Father will send the Holy Spirit to be with you. He will be your Helper. He will come in my name, and he will teach you all things.
KJV: But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Unfortunately, some believe God’s spirit is in everyone. Incidentally, each letter (epistle) in the New Testament was written to the born again (Spirit-filled) believers. Therefore, the valuable truth in Ephesians 4:6, “the one God…living in us all” applies to born-again believers.

The Spirit of Christ gives you life

Romans 8:10 [read Romans 8:1-11 (10)]
Your body will always be dead because of sin. But if Christ is in you, then the Spirit gives you life, because Christ made you right with God. (ICB)
KJV: And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

In conclusion, the Scriptures often mention that the Holy Spirit is a gift from God (Acts 2:38). Also keep in mind the one baptism mentioned in Ephesians is the baptism of the Holy Spirit (John 1:33). That is the baptism Jesus baptizes with; the Holy Spirit. I pray that you have enjoyed and will make the most of this Bible lesson. Blessings to you and your loved ones— Tim. ☺
