The Holy Spirit Bible Lesson
One Spirit, the Holy Spirit of God
Ephesians 4:3-6 Work hard to live together as one by the help of the Holy Spirit. Then there will be peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit. There is one hope in which you were called.
5 There is one Lord and one faith and one baptism. 6 There is one God. He is the Father of us all. He is over us all. He is the One working through us all. He is the One living in us all. (NLV) Ephesians 4:1-6 (key verse: 4)
The lesson focus is the Holy Spirit. Of course, you can find many truths about the Holy Spirit in the Bible. However, we will highlight 2 valuable truths.
Before going into those truths, let’s understand the reason Paul spoke of one Spirit. First and foremost the issue, in the church, seemed to relate to Jew vs. non-Jew. In other words, unity in the body without divisions of any kind.
In addition, he spoke of the various spiritual gifts but same [Holy] Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4). Ultimately, we may be different in many ways but you must be mindful of what we share; the same Spirit.
As a matter of fact, all born again believers are made one body by one Holy Spirit [read 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 (note the use of ‘same spirit’ in 4, 8 & 9)].
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slave or free; and have all been made to drink of one Spirit. (RKJNT)
2 Valuable Truths You Should Know
1. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God
John 4:24a God is Spirit… 2 Corinthians 3:6 …the Spirit gives life. 2 Corinthians 3:17 the Lord is the Spirit
Above all, do not let the various Holy Spirit titles/names confuse you. For instance, the Spirit of Christ1, the Spirit of God2, and the Spirit of truth3 are the same Spirit. Jesus actually said He and the father will live in you. John 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling place with him. (NHEB)
Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. (KJV) [read Ephesians 4:25-32 (key verse: 30)]
2. The Holy Spirit lives only in the born again believers
Luke 11:13 If then you know how to give good gifts to your children, even though you are sinful [human beings], how much more [likely] is it that your Father in heaven will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” (AUV) [read Luke 11:9-13 (11-13)]
Unfortunately, some believe God’s spirit is in everyone. Incidentally, each letter (epistle) in the New Testament was written to the born again (Spirit-filled) believers. Therefore, the valuable truth in Ephesians 4:6, “the one God…living in us all” applies to born again believers.
In conclusion, the Scriptures often mention that the Holy Spirit is a gift given by God (Acts 2:38). Also keep in mind the one baptism mentioned in Ephesians is the baptism of the Holy Spirit (John 1:33). That is the baptism Jesus baptizes with; the Holy Spirit.
God’s gift to His children is His Spirit. It is for everyone but not in all! Blessings to you my friends—♥ Tim.
