STM Bible Study Summary – Help the Needy

Show people the love of God. Jesus set the example. Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.
Luke 6:30-31
Give to everyone who asks you for something. If someone takes what is yours, don’t insist on getting it back. 31 “Do for other people everything you want them to do for you. (GW)
KJV: Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

Think about this

Helping those in need around the world is becoming increasingly important. The followers of Christ should be first responders or should we? Please pray with an open mind that the Lord will give you guidance and proper understanding. This Bible study should assist by pointing to Scriptures related to helping those in need.

Key Points:

The destruction of Sodom

Failure to help the poor and needy was one of the reasons the Lord reprimanded Jerusalem and destroyed Sodom.
Ezekiel 16:49
The sins of your sister Sodom were these: She and her daughters were proud, greedy, and lazy. They didn’t help the poor and those in need. (FBV)
KJV: Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

Doing good deeds

Jesus cautioned us about the way we do for others. Do it without making a show. Be discreet, it should be an act of love!
Matthew 6:2-4
When you give to needy people, do not announce it by having trumpets blown. Do not be like those who only pretend to be holy. They announce what they do in the synagogues and on the streets. They want to be honored by other people. What I’m about to tell you is true. They have received their complete reward. 3 When you give to needy people, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. 4 Then your giving will be done secretly. Your Father will reward you, because he sees what you do secretly. (NIRV)
KJV: Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

The last judgment

Disciple’s Study Bible – When the Lord returns, the distinction between those who served God and those who did not will be made clear as all stand before the judgment seat for the great separation. The way we served will determine whether or not we are Christ’s disciples. Those who serve with proper motives serve the Lord by serving people in need.
Matthew 25:35
For when I was hungry, you gave me food; when I was thirsty, you gave me drink; when I was homeless, you gave me a welcome; (WNT)
KJV: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

Assignment, spiritual gift, or an act of genuine love?

Now let’s find out who the Bible says should help the needy! Is it an assignment given to certain people, for instance, deacons[1]?
1 Corinthians 12:28
Now God has placed some [ministries] in the church [as follows]: First apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, then; miracles, then gifts [enabling people] to perform [supernatural] healings, [those able] to help the needy, [wise] administrators, [and] those able to speak in different languages. (AUV) [read 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 (27-28); Acts 6:1-10; 8:5-17]
KJV: And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
Helps (in 1 Corinthians 12:28)
G484 ἀντίληψις antilepsis (an-tiy’-lee-psis) n. [per Thayer’s Greek Lexicon] to aid, help. The ministrations [assistance in time of difficulty] of the deacons, who have care of the poor and the sick.
Etheridge and Murdock (both Aramaic translations), Tyndale, and all Early Modern English translators except Wycliffe say helpers instead of helps.

On the other hand, does giving to those in need show Godly love (imparted by the Holy Spirit)? Please continue reading to get the answer!

The Corinthians and the grace of giving

2 Corinthians 8:7
You are rich [excel] in everything—in faith, in speaking, in knowledge, in truly wanting to help [eagerness; zeal], and in the love you learned [that is in you] from us. In the same way, be strong [excel] also in the grace of giving [i.e., of giving financial help to the needy saints in Macedonia]. (EXB)
KJV: Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this
grace also.
  • Bible Exposition Commentary – Paul was contrasting the attitude of the Macedonians with that of the Corinthians. He was pointing out that the Macedonians were following the example of the Lord: they were poor, yet they gave.
  • The Defender’s Study Bible – Note that giving and sharing of one’s means is called a “grace”—just as faith, love, etc.
  • J. Vernon McGee’s Thru the Bible – Paul is urging the Corinthians to show the proof of their love.
Grace (in 2 Corinthians 8:7)
G5485 χάρις charis (cha’-ris) n. [per Thayer’s Greek Lexicon] a token or proof of grace. An act of kindness.
Mickelson’s Enhanced Strong’s Dictionaries of the Greek and Hebrew Testaments – (Especially) grace, the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life.

The church united and cared for each other

As a child of God, we should ask “how can I help the needy—those in need of help”? The word needy can mean different things, I focus on two in this Bible study: the homeless and the poor.
Acts 2:44-45
And all those who were of the faith kept together, and had all things in common; 45 And exchanging their goods and property for money, they made division of it among them all, as they had need. (BBE)
KJV: And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

Believe God and do good things

Bible Background Commentary – God commanded his people to supply the needs of the poor (Deuteronomy 15:7-11); to fail to do so was disobedience to his law.
James 2:14-17
My Christian brothers, you say that you believe in God. Then you must show this in the things that you do. If not, your faith will not help you. It will not save you. 15 For example, maybe a believer does not have enough clothes to wear or enough food to eat. 16 Then one of you may say to them, ‘Go with God’s peace! I pray that you will be warm. I pray that you will eat well.’ But if you do not give to them what they need, that does not help them at all.
17 How we believe in God is also like that. If our faith does not lead us to do good things, then it is not worth anything. It is dead! (EASY)
KJV: What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Help the Needy "For I was hungry, and you gave me no food: I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink: 43 I was a stranger, and you did not take me in: naked, and you did not clothe me: sick, and in prison, and you did not visit me." Matthew 25:42-43 (RKJNT)

The Homeless

The Global Housing Crisis: A Crisis Unlike Any Other
“More than 1.8 billion people around the world do not have adequate housing, an estimated 15 million people are forcibly evicted every year, and 150 million more are living in homelessness.”
Jesus and His followers were homeless. But helping the homeless and the needy was part of their ministry. So, do what you can each time you have the chance to help a homeless person.
Matthew 8:20
Jesus replied, “‘Wild animals and birds have their own places to live. But I, the Son of Man, have no place of my own to lie down and rest. (EASY)
KJV: And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
1 Corinthians 4:10-11
We are fools for Christ, but you are wise through Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, but we are dishonored! 11 Up to this very moment we are hungry, thirsty, wearing rags, abused, and homeless. (CEB)
KJV: We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised. 11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;

Greek definition

Astateo – homeless (have no certain dwelling-place)
G790 ἀστατέω astateo (a-sta-te’-ō) v. (figuratively) homeless; to wander about, to rove without a settled abode. Found only in 1 Corinthians 4:11.

English definition

The National Health Care for the Homeless Council
An individual or family who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.

Jesus teaches about money and possessions

Focus on eternal life rather than getting and keeping things. [Acts 2:44, 4:32, John 12:6, Acts 5:2].
Luke 12:33-34 – Jesus said to His disciples:
Sell what you have, and give the money to the poor. Get yourselves purses that don’t wear out: treasure in heaven that will never run out, where no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. 34 For what you value the most shows who you really are. (FBV)
KJV: Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Paul’s defense before Felix

Paul often mentioned helping the needy in his letters. [Romans 15:25-28; 1 Corinthians 16:1-4; 2 Corinthians 8:13-14; 9:12-13 read 2 Corinthians 8:1-9:15; Galatians 2:10].
Acts 24:17 – Paul said:
“After several years away, I returned to Jerusalem with money to aid my people and to offer sacrifices to God. (NLT)
KJV: Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings.

Christ our pattern

2 Corinthians 8:13-14
Of course, I don’t mean your giving should make life easy for others and hard for yourselves. I only mean that there should be some equality. 14 Right now you have plenty and can help those who are in need. Later, they will have plenty and can share with you when you need it. In this way, things will be equal. (NLT)
KJV: For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened: 14 But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:
God’s people should support one another, as Paul showed and taught:
Romans 15:25-26
Now I am going to Jerusalem to help God’s people there. 26 Some of them are poor, and the believers in Macedonia and Achaia wanted to help them. So they gathered some money to send them. (ERV)
KJV: But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints. 26 For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.
NOTE: Often we will miss the proper understanding of scripture if we do not study or read from start to finish. If we do not read verses 22 through 33 or at least verse 26, most would think Paul meant to preach when he said “to minister”.
To minister explained
Consider this: Paul stated clearly that he was going to Jerusalem to aid the poor (needy) saints (i.e., provide them with food and other basic life needs).
Diakoneo – to minister
G1247 διακονέω diakoneo (d̮iy-a-ko-ne’-ō) v. 1. specifically per Thayer’s Greek Lexicon: to supply food and the necessaries of life; to relieve one’s necessities (e. g. by collecting alms).

Remember the poor (needy)

Galatians 2:10
The only thing they {James, Peter, and John} asked us was to remember to help the poor [meaning especially the poor believers in Jerusalem; Acts 11:27–30]—something I really wanted [myself was eager/zealous] to do. (EXB)
KJV: Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.

Jerusalem, More Wicked than Samaria and Sodom

The sin of Samaria was idolatry [Amos 8:14]. Sodom’s sins included a failure to provide for the needs of the poor and needy.
Ezekiel 16:48-50
“By my life, says the Lord, Sodom your sister never did, she or her daughters, what you and your daughters have done. 49 Truly, this was the sin of your sister Sodom: pride, a full measure of food, and the comforts of wealth in peace, were seen in her and her daughters, and she gave no help to the poor or to those in need. 50 They were full of pride and did what was disgusting to me: and so I took them away as you have seen.” (BBE)
KJV: As I live, saith the Lord GOD, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. 49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.

Treat Others Fairly

Bible Exposition Commentary – Wise Christians will be generous to their neighbors and live peaceably with them (vv. 27-30), doing their best to avoid unnecessary disagreements (Romans 12:18). After all, if we truly love God, we will love our neighbor as we would want him to love us.
Proverbs 3:27-28
Do everything you possibly can for those who need help [Romans 13:7; Galatians 6:10]. 28 If your neighbor needs something you have, don’t say, “Come back tomorrow.” Give it to him immediately [Leviticus 19:13; Deuteronomy 24:15]. (ETR)
KJV: Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. 28 Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
We should do our best to use God’s wisdom which is: pure, peaceful, gentle ♦||♦ easy to please ♦||♦ always ready to help people and do good for others ♦||♦ fair and honest {from James 3:17}.
Open your homes to each other [and share your food] without grumbling or complaining. 1 Peter 4:9 | compare translations

Please do not step over a person when you see them lying on the sidewalk or avoid them because of their appearance or body odor. Some of us are a paycheck away from being in their place, think of how you would like to be treated. Not all homeless people are lazy, careless, drug addicts, criminals, or alcoholics. Some of us treat animals better than we do humans. Have you tried helping the needy or those living in poverty?

Use God’s Gifts Wisely

Barnes’ Notes on the New Testament 1 Peter 4:10 – The word minister here (διακονουντες) would refer to any kind of ministering, whether by counsel, by advice, by the supply of the wants of the poor, or by preaching.
1 Peter 4:7-11
Everything in the world is about to be wrapped up, so take nothing for granted. Stay wide-awake in prayer. Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it. Love makes up for practically anything. Be quick to give a meal to the hungry, a bed to the homeless—cheerfully. Be generous with the different things God gave you, passing them around so all get in on it: if words, let it be God’s words; if help, let it be God’s hearty help. That way, God’s bright presence will be evident in everything through Jesus, and he’ll get all the credit as the One mighty in everything—encores to the end of time. Oh, yes! (The Message)
KJV: But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. 8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. 9 Use hospitality one to another without grudging. 10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Absence of Home

Absence of home may include a range of experiences and deprivations, both physical and social. In some circumstances, absence of physical shelter may be the primary concern, in other contexts, lack of access to land may be equally critical. While some residents of informal settlements do not self identify as homeless but are rather struggling for upgrading, services and security of existing homes, for others who live in precarious situations, sometimes renting informally and subject to eviction at a moment’s notice or in grossly inadequate shelter, informality is a form of homelessness. Intertwined with physical deprivations and lack of security is the loss of social connection — the feeling of “belonging nowhere.” For street connected children, homelessness may be experienced as a reliance on substitute social connections, established for survival on the street.

Don’t forget to do good things for others and to share what you have with them. These are the kinds of sacrifices that please God. Hebrews 13:16 (GW)

The Poor and the Needy

When we help the needy it takes us beyond feeling love because it is action. It’s one thing to feel love for others but so much better when we show love.
Proverbs 31:8-9
Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Help people who are in trouble. 9 Stand up for what you know is right, and judge all people fairly. Protect the rights of the poor and those who need help.
KJV: Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. 9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

Hebrew and Greek definitions – Poor

Hebrew: `Aniy or ʿānî – poor
H6041 עָנִי `aniy (aw-nee’) adj. poor and weak, oppressed by the rich and powerful [per the Brown-Driver-Briggs Lexicon for poor in Proverbs 31:9].
Greek: ptochos – poor
G4434 πτωχός ptochos (ptō-chos’) adj. poor, needy, destitute of wealth, influence, position, honors; lowly, afflicted [per the Thayer’s Greek Lexicon for poor in Matthew 11:5; Luke 4:18; and James 2:5].

English definition – Poor

dictionary.com
Having little or no money, goods, or other means of support.

Those living in poverty/poor people

Have you ever been poor and not known it? As a boy living in county-provided housing, I did not realize we were poor. My mother provided the basic needs and taught us to be thankful for what we had.

Now that I am older, I realize we were poor from an economic point of view. Like Paul, I can say I know what it is like to go without. As a result, I have compassion for the poor.

Do you talk to poor people? Remember, they are humans. Do you avoid certain areas to escape this reality? Jesus said “Do to others as you wish them to do to you.” [Luke 6:31 (OEBus)]
Matthew 7:12
So do the good things for other people that you would want them to do for you. That is true in everything you do. That is what God’s Law and the messages of God’s prophets teach us. (EASY)
KJV: Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

Be a giver

Paul says farewell to the Ephesian elders. Amongst other things, he advised them to be givers.
Acts 20:32-35
“Now I am putting you in the care of God and the message about his grace. That message is able to give you strength, and it will give you the blessings that God has for all his holy people. 33 When I was with you, I never wanted anyone’s money or fine clothes. 34 You know that I always worked to take care of my own needs and the needs of those who were with me. 35 I showed you in all things that you should work as I did and help the weak. I taught you to remember the words of Jesus. He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (ICB)
KJV: And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. 33 I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel. 34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. 35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

In richer countries, like the USA and UK, where their poor are a minority the first requirement for any real solution to that poverty is to convince the majority in those countries that they will benefit by abolishing poverty in their own country. Unfortunately, most of the majority may often have come to like having a poor minority and to believing wrongly that having a poor minority benefits the majority economically. – World Poverty, a look at causes and solutions

The collection for needy Christians in Jerusalem

This dialogue began in chapter 8 and is not about an offering for the building (place of assembly). It is about providing for the needy saints. Read 2 Corinthians 8:1-9:15 [focus on chapter 8 verses 1-15; the key verses are 10-12. Keep reading the rest of chapter 8 thru chapter 9 verse 15. Focus on 7, 9, and 13; verses 11 and 12 are key verses. Compare Proverbs 22:9; Psalms 112:9]
Consider this: Life Application Bible Commentary – This was to be intentional, planned giving, for Paul had already told them to lay aside some money every week (1 Corinthians 16:1-4). This was one reason for Paul sending Titus ahead. He wanted someone to organize the weekly collections so that no one would fall short of how much they had pledged the year before (9:5).
2 Corinthians 9:6-11
Remember this: The person who plants a little will have a small harvest. But the person who plants a lot will have a big harvest. 7 Each one should give, then, what he has decided in his heart to give [Proverbs 22:9 and 11:25]. He should not give if it makes him sad. And he should not give if he thinks he is forced to give. God loves the person who gives happily. 8 And God can give you more blessings than you need. Then you will always have plenty of everything. You will have enough to give to every good work. 9 It is written in the Scriptures:
He [the righteous] gives freely to the poor. The things he does are right and will continue forever.” [Psalm 112:9]
10 God is the One who gives seed to the farmer. And he gives bread for food. And God will give you all the seed you need and make it grow. He will make a great harvest from your goodness. 11 God will make you rich in every way so that you can always give freely. And your giving through us [when we deliver your gift to those who need it] will cause many to give thanks to God. (ICB)

KJV

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: 9 (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. 10 Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) 11 Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.

One of the qualities of the virtuous woman is that “She opens her arms to the poor; yes, she extends her hands to the needy.” Proverbs 31:20 (WEB)

Show people the love of God

Fasting, when done right, shows God’s love for needy people. Isaiah 58:7 explains some things God wants us to do when we fast. Read Isaiah 58:1-14 for the complete message.
Isaiah 58:7
Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help. (NLT)
KJV: Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

Love is shown via actions

We know God’s love because Jesus sacrificed his life for us. Show your love to others through your actions!
1 John 3:16-17
We know what love is because Jesus Christ gave his life for us. So we should give our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 Suppose someone sees a brother or sister in need and is able to help them. And suppose that person doesn’t take pity on these needy people. Then how can the love of God be in that person? (NIRV)
KJV: Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

Hopefully, you will be willing to do what you can to show people the love of God and help the needy! Helping the homeless and the poor is part of ministry and genuine love, as demonstrated by Jesus, His disciples, and the churches in the Bible. Follow the example of Jesus and the Apostles; help the needy and be blessed. I pray that you have enjoyed and will make the most of this Bible study. Blessings to you and your loved ones— Tim. ☺

  1. You are absolutely right brother Tim. I thank the LORD for allowing me to be able to help 2 mentally challenged men that I take care of in a group home. I am expecting another one next month. I try my best to help anyone in anyway I can. I feel so blessed and loved by GOD and all that he allows me to do. The past few years I have helped a lot of people and it feels good when someone says thank you. I appreciate what you’ve done for me. GLORY be YOUR name JESUS. HALLELUJAH 🙂 🙂 🙂

  2. Very good blog! My hope is that people who choose to step over or deliberately act invisible, will wake up and demonstrate compassion for those in need.

I know I don't have all of the answers, do you have a comment, suggestion, or is there a topic you'd like me to write about?
