God's word - is life - study it - live it

STM Bible Lesson – God’s Word is the Best Soul Food

Lesson focus: 2 Timothy 3:15-17. Bible lesson background 2 Timothy 3:10-17: The Word of God feeds your soul and is the source of the wisdom of salvation also. In other words:

  1. It reveals God’s will.
  2. Provides corrective information for right living.
  3. And it tells us what we must do as well as not do to please God.
2 Timothy 3:15-17 [read 2 Timothy 3:10-17 (15-17)]
You have known the Holy Scriptures since you were a child. The Scriptures are able to make you wise. And that wisdom leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (ICB)
16 Everything in the Scriptures is God’s Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping people and for correcting them and showing them how to live. 17 The Scriptures train God’s servants to do all kinds of good deeds. (CEV)
KJV: And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

You should know this…

Salvation is God’s desire for everyone.

1 Timothy 2:4 [read 1 Timothy 2:1-7 (4)]
God wants all people to be saved. And he wants everyone to know the truth. (ICB)
KJV: Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Listen to advice

The first thing to remember, as stated in 2 Timothy 3:16, God’s word will teach you. So hear the word and understand it. Use the Bible as your life coach and for life advice. Wise people get advice from others. But does anyone have more wisdom than God?
Proverbs 12:15 [read Proverbs 12:15-16 (15)]
Stupid people always think they are right. Wise people listen to advice. (GNT)
KJV: The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.
What better place get advice than the word of God!

Let God’s word help you

Second, the word of God (the Bible) will help you. It will show what needs to change in your life. God’s word will also make you aware of the helper. You do not have to go through this life without divine support.
Ephesians 4:22-24 [read Ephesians 4:22-24 ()]
You were taught to leave your old self. This means that you must stop living the evil way you lived before. That old self gets worse and worse, because people are fooled by the evil they want to do. 23 You must be made new in your hearts and in your thinking. 24 Be that new person who was made to be like God, truly good and pleasing to him. (ERV)
KJV: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Live to please God

Most importantly, this word of life will show you how to live. So you can please God and receive your reward for doing what He wants. You are here for a reason; learn how to live right!
1 Thessalonians 4:7 [read 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 (7)]
God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives. (NLT)
KJV: For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

The Bible is the only book I know that grows with you. From infancy to maturity, it gets more clear as you develop. Read a Scripture today; if you keep learning, ten years later you get a new understanding. —Tim

The best soul food

Jeremiah 15:16 [read Jeremiah 15:10-18 (16)]
Your words are what sustain me; they are food to my hungry soul. They bring joy to my sorrowing heart and delight me. How proud I am to bear your name, O Lord. (TLB)
KJV: Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.
Strong & McClintock’s Cyclopedia
The heart is the center of all the functions of the soul’s life, the terms “heart” and “soul” are often used interchangeably in Scripture.

Find a way to become interested in the Bible. After all, it is the best soul food.

  • One suggestion is to join a study group or use a modern version* of the Bible. Versions that use modern English will help make it more interesting.
  • Another option is to ask your pastor or spiritual leader for advice. Find a way to get into the word of God.

You do not get it

The Bible has certain passages that are difficult to understand. Take caution: the Bible is spiritual rather than merely a book or narrative. Thus, it is for God’s born-again children as well as those who want to be His children.

To understand it you need a spiritual teacher. Allow yourself time to learn how to use the Holy Spirit to teach you. At the right time, you will be able to read and study God’s word on your own. Until then, be patient and learn from qualified teachers.

1 Corinthians 2:14 [read 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 (14)]
Now the natural person [without the Holy Spirit] does not receive the things [i.e., truths] revealed by the Holy Spirit of God, because they are [considered] foolishness to him. And he cannot understand them because they must be discerned by using spiritual judgment [i.e., judgment aided by the Holy Spirit]. (AUV)
KJV: But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Speak up

Do not assume your pastor or spiritual leader knows you are not getting it. For instance, you are a babe in Christ. You attend a Bible class with the mature members. But, you do not know as much about the Bible as they do. So you feel left out. They give answers, and you do not take part.

The same thing happens to mature students when milk is provided instead of meat. All need proper spiritual nutrition.

Babes need the milk of God’s word. The mature need the meat.
1 Corinthians 3:1-2 [read 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 (1-2)]
My brothers and sisters, I couldn’t talk with you as spiritual believers, but as worldly people—like baby Christians. 2 I gave you milk—I couldn’t give you solid food to eat, because you weren’t ready for it. (FBV)
KJV: And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

You do not see the point

Why learn about God? There are benefits and rewards for reading, studying, and hearing God’s word. Primarily, improved life here on earth and the hope of a blissful life after.

Can you afford to give up? No, please do not stop; adjust. Make the proper changes. Pray and ask the Lord to give you an appetite or hunger for the word. After all, God’s Word is the best soul food.

Romans 15:4 [read Romans 15:1-6 (4)]
Everything that people wrote in the Bible in past times is there to teach us something. Those words help us to be patient and strong. As a result, we can trust God to do what he has promised. (EASY)
KJV: For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Things might make you feel hopeless since the world is so insane. But there is hope for you. That hope is  God’s word.

Source of Life

Did you know that God’s word is a source of life? It is the word of life.

John 5:24 [read John 5:24-30 (24)]
For sure, I tell you, anyone who hears My Word and puts his trust in Him Who sent Me has life that lasts forever. He will not be guilty. He has already passed from death into life. (NLV)
KJV: Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Be ready and willing to receive the word of life. It will increase your faith (Romans 10:17) and save you from spiritual death. You cannot have a spiritual life without the word of life—God’s word.

Real soul food

The word of God is food for your soul—real soul food. One cannot live by only eating bread that feeds the body. The spiritual part of you also needs feeding; the spiritual bread—God’s word. Let the word of life be your spiritual food. Remember, God’s Word is the best soul food. So, eat it often!

John 6:35 [read John 6:22-40 (35)]
Jesus said, `I am the bread that gives life. Anyone who comes to me will never be hungry. Anyone who believes in me will never be thirsty.‘ (WE)
KJV: And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Learn to hunger for the word of God. Binge on it and live by it! Hopefully, you’ll agree that God’s Word is the best soul food! Thank you for taking the time to read this Bible lesson. I urge you to make full use of it. Blessings to you and your loved ones— Tim. ☺
